Preparing for Slower Growth: A Shift Toward Defence

Financial markets may be approaching an important turning point. Hedgeye's latest outlook anticipates slowing economic growth during the first half of 2027, potentially creating a more challenging environment for equities.

Historically, slowing growth tends to favour defensive investments over economically sensitive stocks. Hedgeye is highlighting a gradual shift away from high-growth, high-volatility equities toward consumer staples, food producers, insurance companies and lower-volatility investments.

Perhaps the most significant opportunity is emerging in long-term U.S. Treasury bonds. With 10-year and 30-year Treasury yields showing signs of weakening, falling interest rates could provide meaningful capital appreciation for longer-duration bonds.

The important distinction is between predicting a recession and preparing for changing economic conditions.

Rather than making dramatic portfolio changes, we favour incremental adjustments based on market signals, emphasizing capital preservation while maintaining flexibility.

The takeaway: When economic growth slows, protecting capital can become just as important as growing it.

Importantly, Red Barn/Vesta portfolios are not driven exclusively by economic cycles or public market performance. Our diversified approach also incorporates investments influenced by other event-driven opportunities, some of which may have limited correlation with traditional stock and bond markets.

This provides additional sources of potential returns while helping manage overall portfolio risk.
